It appears Sean Lewis has found his guy to lead the San Diego State offense in 2024. True freshman Danny O’Neil, a three-star from Indiana, won the job over transfer quarterback AJ Duffy and will start week one, according to Pete Thamel. The Aztecs take on FCS Texas A&M Commerce in what should be an easier adjustment for O’Neil.
O’Neil has been described as having dual-threat ability, good mechanics, and a compact throwing motion. He rushed for over 1,300 yards in high school, including 722 in his final season. In Lewis’ Veer-and-Shoot offense, he could post massive numbers, as the quarterbacks preceding him did at both Kent State and Colorado.
However, O’Neil is currently ranked 159th in Campus2Canton’s quarterback rankings, but with this move made official, he will see his stock rise. He is worth a late-round dart throw in college fantasy leagues.
