Jeff Choate and the Nevada staff have made a decision on their starting quarterback, and it’s a surprising one. According to Pete Thamel, incumbent Brendon Lewis beat out Nebraska transfer Chubba Purdy for the week zero starting role. Purdy, who battled a shoulder injury in camp, could not fight off Lewis down the stretch.
Lewis and Nevada get SMU week zero at home. Despite the season opener being in Reno, the Wolfpack are four-touchdown underdogs to the Mustangs. The public does not expect a competitive Nevada team in year one under Choate, evidenced by the 2.5-win total (shaded to the under) on Fanduel.
However, Lewis is ranked 133rd among quarterbacks at Campus2Canton but presents limited upside in what projects to be a putrid offense in 2024.
