Washington State head coach Jake Dickert has named redshirt sophomore John Mateer as the team’s starting quarterback ahead of the Cougars’ August 31 debut against Portland State, as reported by The Spokesman-Review’s Greg Woods.
Mateer wins the job over Bryant University transfer Zevi Eckhaus. Mateer is the quarterback 80 in Campus2Canton’s C2C rankings and number 39 in the CFF rankings.
Much intrigue surrounded the Cougars’ quarterback battle given what many consider a downgrade in competition for the team in 2024. After the dismantling of the PAC 12 Washington State will play what amounts to a Mountain West schedule this season.
